When Preparing Your Home For Sale - Aim for a Cohesive Look

As a professional home stager in Atlanta, I'm often asked by sellers what "look" they should aim for that works well when selling a home.

The short answer is to when possible, keep it as consistent throughout. Why? Let's use paint color as our example. Let's say that the living room is a celery green, the dining room is red and the kitchen is yellow. Each time you introduce a "new" color, your eye stops, registers the new color (all subconsciously) and carries on. With the use of one color, there is no stopping. Your eye continues to flow and as a result, can help make the space appear "visually" larger.

Yesterday, while staging this home in Austell, Georgia for an Atlanta investor - the walls were all painted the same color. So... what I elected to do is to carry that thought process of "keeping things consistent" with using like-colors in the furniture and accessories throughout.

Here are a few of the before and after pictures.

Kathy- Good advice.  The eye needs to flow. I love the ironwork over the sofa.  The rooms seem to flow and gives a calming air.

Kathy--such great advice.  I so often am dealing with homes where each room has it's own "personality" and color theme and nothing relates to anything adjacent to it--even flooring.  Your living room is fantastic.  I agree with Kathy about the ironwork over the sofa.

Cohisive,... and absolutely stunning Kathy!  You have given some excellent advice here Kathy and worded it beautifully.  These rooms feel relaxing and inviting and flow wonderfully.

Kathy - Love the black, white and beige - it's just gorgeous.  A very sophisticated colour palate.

Another beautiful staging, Kathy!   I agree that it helps to keep the look throughout a house cohesive both with color and style and to be mindful of the style of the actual house - i.e. craftsman, mid-century modern, etc. when selecting furniture and colors.

I love the look you created here Kathy. We try to tie colors throughout a house as well. Your pictures really capture the color and pattern theme without looking stagey.

Beautiful - I love the metal piece of art you used instead of a painting about the couch.  Great for interest and texture!

Hi Kathy, great staging done on this home.  About a year or so ago I was in the process of being certified by Haverhill Institute of Staging & Design, but did not finish the process.  It is on my to do list, just one more feather in my cap for me to add additional value to my clients.  But in the mean time.  Have any of you stagers ever considered or tried virtual staging for clients outside of your locality?  Also, I plan on re-blogging, wanted to reblog the reblog I found this on, but it will not let you do that.
